Andreas Thorkildsen emerges as pre-favourite for Daegu amid marking a 90.61m throw – Athletics news
Displaying a performance just ahead of the mega event is crucial to send the right message to one’s potential rivals, and this is exactly what Andreas Thorkildsen, the Norwegian Javelin Thrower has done while performing at the Norwegian Championships on
Sunday, August 14. In order to emerge as a per-favourite before the eyes of his spectators, the 29-year-old athlete observed a throw of 90.61m.
Thorkildsen, who had been already among the favourites for the upcoming IAAF World Athletics Championships in Daegu, after his recent performance, has only firmed his position before the eyes of his fans and contestants. The double European champion, for
his remarkable throw of 88.43m, already leads the world list for the season and he managed to cross the 90m threshold in the third round.
The Norwegian, who is now a habitual beyond 90m thrower, observed his third farthest throw on this Sunday, while overall, this was his eighth throw that surpassed the 90m mark.
The Kristiansand-born Thorkildsen happens to be the first javelin thrower in the history of the game, who not only bagged the European Championships title, but also marked his dominance over the World Championships and Olympic games. His winning streak in
the Olympics was observed in 2004 and 2008, while in the years 2006 and 2010, he prevailed as the European Champion. Finally, in 2009, he named the World Championships in Berlin.
In the previous World Championship events (in 2005 and 2007), the formidable thrower had concluded the events with silver medals. Back in 2001, he set a world junior record. The current personal best of the strong contender for this year’s world championships
stands at 91.59m, which he set in 2006. Given his present performance, it seems that he is all set to embark on his personal record as well.
At the Norwegian championships, the start observed by Thorkildsen was rather disappointing as it was marked by two fouls. However, he did not take long before overcoming the glitches and sent his throw to a mammoth 85.55m. In the fourth round, the javelin
thrown by him landed at 84.85m.
This was the time when he felt confident enough to put in his entire force and mark a throw that left spectators electrified. Provided that Thorkildsen sustains this performance of his in the global athletics event in Daegu, he will not find it difficult
to defend his world title.
