Bent was ruled out for the last three months of the campaign due to an ankle injury, which also saw him missing out on a spot in the national team for the European Championships. However, the English striker is expected to return for the pre-season training next week, fully fit.
After last season, which was extremely disappointing for both player and club, Bent was linked with a move away but according to Weimann, the former Sunderland man can be expected to stick around. The Austrian youngster believed Bent would be crucial for the team in the upcoming season.
Weimann himself has been with Aston Villa for a while now, having joined the club’s youth academy in 2007. He earned a promotion to the senior side in 2010. While he got off to a flying start, scoring twice in a pre-season fixture, the striker picked up an injury in the Europa League.
He was loaned out to Watford in the January 2011, where he remained at the end of the season, a loan move that would be extended in the summer of 2012. In total, Weimann has made 15 appearances in the Premier League, with two goals scored.
Weimann said in an interview:
“Darren is our number one striker and it's important for the club he stays fit all season, hopefully gets loads of goals and stays at Villa as well.
Everyone knows his goal record and to have a fit and fresh Darren Bent will be brilliant going into the start of the season.
He only needs one chance and he'll stick it away.”
Despite picking up the ankle injury and only making 25 appearances in all competitions, Bent finished as the top goal scorer for Aston Villa with ten goals. Having joined the club in the winter transfer window of 2011, Bent has made a total of 41 appearances and has scored 19 goals.
Since his arrival, Bent has become an important part of the squad and will be expected to play an even bigger role under the new manager. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 McLeish was sacked at the end of last season after the Villans barely avoided relegation.
