Andreev/Tursunov outplay Tipsarevic/Troicki in their second tie at Power Horse World Team Cup
Russia finally wins a matchup against Serbia in the round robin of the Power Horse World Team Cup, as the combination of Igor Andreev and Dmitry Tursunov defeated the Serbian pair of Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki on Wednesday.
The Russians took one hour and nineteen minutes to wrap up the three-setter 6-3, 4-6, 10-5, still failing to avoid defeat for their side in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Russia suffered defeat in the opening singles rubber of the tie against Serbia, when Andreev lost to Dusan Lajovic on Tuesday. The Serbians delivered the final blow to Team Russia when Viktor Troicki won his singles match against
Mikhail Youzhny to seal victory for their side. Tie was already settled in Serbia’s favour when the Russian duo registered its first win to end the competition at 1-2.
Team Russia accomplished a 2-1 victory over the Spanish squad in the opening tie but failed to carry on its winning momentum in the contest against Serbia. Andreev and Tursunov displayed amazing skills to save Russia from a humiliating
white-wash defeat by winning the doubles matchup.
The enthralling three-setter provided an excellent treat to watch for the local crowd at Dusseldorf, with the two pairs battling hard to come out as the winner. The contest remained evenly poised throughout and it was very hard
to predict the winner till the end. The Russian pair had a magnificent start, winning the opening set with authority but Tipsarevic and Troicki bounced right back in to the game to bag the second set. The game was pushed in to the third set, which fell to
the name of the Russian in the most assertive manner.
Andreev and Tursunov broke their opponents just once to seal the opening set at 6-3 to get the early advantage. An absolute turn round was seen in the next set, as Tipsarevic and Troicki overwhelmed the Russians to get back in
business. They struck two serve breaks in reply to one break point of Andreev and Tursunov to edge them in the second set. The Serbians reeled off 75 per cent of the first serve points to seal the second set at 6-4 and levelled the game at 1-1.
The decider was dominated by the Russian duo for the most of the time, as the Serbians collected just five points. Andreev and Tursunov finished off the contest at 10-5 but their victory proved worthless for Russia.
Team Russia will next take on the home favourite Germans in their third tie of the World Team Cup.
