Andrej Meszaros to stay out after having a surgery on torn Achilles tendon –NHL Update
Philadelphia Flyers, a team that plays in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL), has announced that their defenseman, Andrej Meszaros, will not be playing for at least sometime as he has had surgery on torn Achilles tendon and will stay
out.
The announcement came from general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Holmgren, when he told that Andrej got injured last week during summer training back in his native country of Slovakia and would be out indefinitely.
This is another bad news for the Flyers as they had suffered a blow when they missed out on the opportunity to sign Nashville Predators’ defenseman Shea Weber. They were looking like favourites to land the star defenseman after they made an interesting offer
sheet of 14 years for an amount of $110 million but their bad luck that Predators matched their offer to keep the player.
This bad news of losing Meszaros has come at a time when there is not much time left in the start of new season, which is starting in October and has just two months left in it.
It also means that now Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based team will have to hire services of some other defensemen to fill in the holes.
Former Minnesota Fighting Saints, Minnesota North Stars and Philadelphia Flyers’ player, Holmgren had told last week that he is expecting his team to sign the 22-year-old Canadian defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon very soon. Bourdon had spent last part of the
2011-2012 season with Flyers and played 45 games for them. He was promising but at 6-foot-0 and 200 pounds, he is not as huge as Meszaros, who is 6-foot-2, 223 pounds.
Meszaros, the Slovakian international, who was selected 23rd overall in the first round of the 2004 NHL draft by Ottawa Senators also brings with him the all important experience that one needs to be a good defenseman.
Having started his hockey career with Dukla Trencin in Slovakia, Meszaros made his NHL debut for Ottawa Senators in 2005-2006 and did not miss even a single regular season game for them in next three seasons. He saw a move to Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008
and eventually moved to Flyers in 2010.
Overall, the Považská Bystrica, Slovakia (then Czechoslovakia) born defenseman has played 522 games in NHL, scoring 200 points point with 49 goals and 151 assists.
