Andres Gonzales earns a spot on the PGA Tour
Andres Gonzales, the former Rebel has made the cut and earned himself a PGA Tour card.
Going into the last day of the 6 day gruelling event that is the PGA Tour Qualifying School, the American golfer’s chances were looking good but he still had one last test to pass. Gonzales was fully aware that getting past this last obstacle standing between
him and the PGA Tour was going to be no walk in the park.
Over the five rounds the player had played he had consistently shot even par or better. This included a 68 in the third round, which complemented the three 71’s and the opening round 70 rather well. A pretty good day at work for the player; but in order
to qualify he needed more still.
"I was at 6 under, and the cut at that point was at 8 or 9," he said. "In my mind, I thought I needed to shoot 5 under in the last round. That was my goal. And I knew if I stuck to my game, I was very capable of that."
Unfortunately Gonzales could not achieve his goal of a five under and could only manage a 4 under instead. However, the good news is that this was good enough as far as qualifying was concerned. In fact the 68 that he scored was one of the best scores at
the field, in what could only be called an action packed final round.
The player, who was previously a part of the Rebels at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, finished the event with a 10-under 419 total score. This meant that he was leading a five-way tie for the 22nd position and finished just one stroke above
the cutline. However, he was too ecstatic to have made the cut, to pay any attention to where the line lay.
"The first time I looked at the leader board was the night before the final round," he said. "In a tournament like that, where there's no cut, I just knew I had to play solid golf every day."
It was brilliant watching the man play some of his best golf to date and perhaps what was even more satisfying was how he kept his cool even under such high pressure. Now Gonzales gets to be a part of the ever-expanding Rebels family on the PGA Tour. The
player believes that if it weren’t for his UNLV fraternity he might not have made it this far.
With the PGA Tour card in his pocket, Andres Gonzales, has already started setting higher goals and working hard for the upcoming season. Will Gonzales be the surprise winner of a title next season? To find out stay tuned.
