Andres Iniesta adds his 2 cents on the Cesc Fabregas saga; relives the World Cup winning goal
Spain’s World Cup winning midfielder Andres Iniesta has said that every player at his club Barcelona wants to see his Spanish teammate Cesc Fabregas make the switch from Arsenal.
The Fabregas transfer saga has by far been the most popular talking point during this transfer window. Barcelona have long been after the midfielder, but his parent club Arsenal are not willing to listen to any offers and have said that the player is not on the market. Still, Iniesta has said that he is hopeful that Fabregas will eventually be allowed to make the move, which according to him is the right thing to do.
While talking to Barcelona’s official club channel ‘Barca TV’, Iniesta said that the entire Barcelona team wants Cesc to come back ‘home’. He added that although the team is very strong already and has number of big names in the squad, if Fabregas joins the team they would go a step up and become an even better team. Iniesta said that regardless of all the interest of Barcelona and the entire team here, the final decision still lies with Arsenal. He added that if Arsene Wenger does not want to let go of him, he is within his rights, but it would not be fair to keep a player without his heart being at the club.
Barcelona already has most of the Spain’s World Cup winning team in their squad (7 Barca players were in the starting line-up of the final match against the Netherlands), and have added to it by signing the World Cup’s highest goal scorer David Villa. The striker made his move before the World Cup from Valencia.
Iniesta said that Villa is one of the best strikers in the world right now, and with him in the team, Barcelona would be even more difficult for opponents to handle. Iniesta said that David Villa fit well in the Spanish team because of the team set-up. He added that the style of Barcelona is quite similar to Spain’s national football team and Villa would have no problems fitting in (also considering that he would be playing alongside most of his Spanish teammates).
Andres Iniesta, in his short career, has won pretty much everything, be it at club or International level. With Barcelona, he has won the Spanish La Liga multiple times, and won the Champions League twice. He has also won the domestic Copa del Rey more than once. Barcelona enjoyed an unprecedented season with 6 trophies in 2008-09, and they ended by winning the Club World Championships. Thus, there is nothing left for him to conquer at the club level. As far as his international career is concerned, not many players at this age would be able to say that they have won both the European championships and the World Cup.
The midfielder reflected back on the World Cup final and said that when he got the ball at his feet and saw the opportunity to win the World Cup for his country, millions of thoughts went through his head in a split second. He said that as the ball hit the back of the net, he felt as though he was floating on cloud nine. Iniesta said that it was an out of body experience for him.
Iniesta said that he still has many years of football ahead of him, and the fact that he has won so much already does not in any way mean that he is short on motivation. He said that winning is a habit and it is just never enough, no matter how much a player achieves in their career. He added that he feels lucky to be at a club like Barcelona and would continue to serve the club to the best of his abilities and would end his career at Camp Nou.
