Andres Martinavarr and Roberto Baena clinch the Boys’ Doubles title – French Open 2011
Spanish boys, Andres Artunedo Martinavarr and Roberto Carballes Baena, rallied past Americans, Mitchell Krueger and Shane Vinsant, in a 5-7, 7-6(5), 10-5 nail biter match to win the Boys’ Doubles title at Roland Garros, second
of the four Grand Slam event held in Paris, France on Saturday.
The fourth seeded Spaniards took one hour and forty-one minutes to triumph over the Americans at Stade Roland Garros. They displayed exceptional skills before losing the opener 5-7. Martinavarr and Baena then co-ordinated well
to take the second set into tie-breaker and clinched it after prevailing in it 7-5. In the super tie-breaker, they dominated all over the court and bagged it with a 10-5 victory.
The unseeded boys confidently entered court two and held their opening serve plausibly. Later they exchanged a break and broke the Spaniards’ serve again in the end to seal the opening set with a 7-5 score line in thirty-nine minutes.
Krueger and Vinsant produced a slightly higher first serve share of 68 percent as compared to their opponents’ 64 percent and registered an impressive 70 percent win on it.
The Spaniard lads re-focused again in the second set and played their best tennis. Despite losing their serve three times, they converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to drag the set into tie-breaker.
Baena and Martinavarr dominated in it to seal the set with a 7-6(5) win in almost an hour. They produced a lightly lower first serve share of 71 percent as opposed to Americans’ 78 percent and earned a convincing 60 percent win on it.
The winning seeds carried their winning ways into the super tie-breaker. They rolled the balls expertly onto the lines and perfected their co-ordination to bag the set with a 10-5 victory. Martinavarr and Baena clobbered a lower
first serve share of 63 percent as compared to Krueger and Vinsant’s 71 percent but registered and amazing 80 percent win on it. In addition to this, their 50 percent of the receiving points winning percent was much higher than Americans’ 13 percent which
helped them clinched easily.
The Spaniards youngsters had a great run of form in this major clay court event. They triumphed over Mexico Japanese team of Marco Aurei Nunez and Kaichi Uchida in three sets in the opening round match. The boys then got a walkover
win against British South African pair of Kyle Edmund and Wayne Montgomery in the second round. They overwhelmed Americans, Bjorn Fratangelo and Alexios Halebian in straight sets in the quarters and battled past another unseeded pair of Moldovan Maxim Dubarenco
and Ukrainian Vladyslav Manafov in a three set thriller to reach this final spot.
