Andrew Bynum says that he will skip the London Olympics - NBA Update
Los Angeles Lakers centre Andrew Bynum said that he will not be participating in the London Olympics and if the organization approaches him he will refuse.
The 24 years old is planning to visit Germany in summers to get his knee fixed.
“I've got to take care of my legs in the off-season," Bynum said. "I've got some things planned for my knees. ... I've got to do some therapy that I'm going overseas to do."
Bynum has been struggling with knee issues for quite some time now and he has performed surgical procedure on each of his knee in the recent years.
During the last season Kobe Bryant underwent the same procedure and he didn’t complain about any knee problems throughout this season. His performance was improved and as a result he is approaching the rim more aggressively. He
concurred that during an interview earlier this season.
“I feel a lot stronger and a lot quicker and able to get to the basket and free-throw line,"
The Germans’ have devised an innovative procedure that targets the molecules which causes inflammation. The blood is removed from the affected area and spun in a centrifuge. The agents which cause the interleukin are removed so
that serum can be obtained; afterwards the serum is injected back in the targeted area.
The whole procedure holds minimal side effects and the recovery time is remarkably short. This is great news for Andrew as he has been facing inflammation in his surgically repaired knees.
So it is for sure that he will be skipping the Olympics, he was not considered in the roster earlier abut after some recent development his name was brought under the consideration.
The season ending injuries of Dwight Howard and LaMarcus Aldridge vacated the slot for a seasoned centre. So in their absence the next most suitable forward option was Andrew.
This is the second time that he has to pass on the offer. In 2008 he was contacted but he had to refuse due to the knee surgery. Despite the injury Bynum has been playing solidly throughout the season.
He averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 60 games. In the past week he went on to score as much as 31 against Golden State Warriors on April 18th and became the impetus behind Lakers’, 99-87 victory.
The Olympic roster has dwindled from 20 to 16 as recently apart of Howard and Aldridge; Chauncey Billups will also not play due to injury. Moreover the committee has announced that Lamar Odom will not be considered due to his poor
performance in this season.
"Lamar Odom had a year that is a forgettable year for him," Colangelo said. "I don't think he possibly, physically or emotionally, could be ready to participate and contribute."
