Andrew Flintoff: In an ideal world I would still be playing cricket – Boxing News
Former English cricketer Andrew Flintoff is preparing for his professional boxing debut these days. He will be fighting at the heavyweight division on November 30 in Manchester. His opponent is not known yet but Flintoff is surely all in for the showdown.
“It's the hardest thing I've ever done,” said the former all rounder.
Flintoff is known for being a cricket enthusiast. When asked about the u-turn in his life, from cricket to boxing, Freddie Flintoff asserted, “Cricket was something I'd been doing since I was a kid and it came naturally, but doing this in a short space of
time with little or no experience has been a challenge.
“There are two sessions a day, a lot of sparring work, a lot of gym work and a strict diet. It's been a challenge but one I'm enjoying.
“In an ideal world I'd still be playing cricket now but I played my last game at 31.”
According to the former English captain, he has gone through a complete lifestyle change in order to prepare himself for the world of boxing. He is being coached by Shane McGuigan, son of former world featherweight champion Barry.
Flintoff played 79 test matches and 141 one-day international matches for England. Due to his recurring injuries, he was forced to end his cricketing career. From then onward, Flintoff dedicated his life to charity, radio and TV, until now.
Flintoff seems excited with the whole idea of being a professional athlete once again. He asserted he is enjoying being a sportsman again, and the new purpose he has.
When asked if he believes he can make it to the mark, Flintoff claimed there will always be critics but he has to do whatever he wants to. The 2005 Ashes hero asserted that he would do his best and try build up a career in boxing.
Right now, the former cricketer is enjoying his time, having steak for breakfast and a lot of lean meat. He wants to give his best shot on November, to ensure he gets bigger fights in the future against some of the elite fighters in the division.
