Andrew Flintoff expected to announce retirement - reports
Andrew Flintoff is expected to today announce his retirement from cricket, it has been reported.
The all-rounder has been battling to return to cricket since undergoing knee surgery after England’s 2009 Ashes victory, but his recovery has been plagued by setbacks.
After initially going under the knife last summer, Flintoff had another operation on his knee early in 2010 but had been hopeful of a return to county cricket for Lancashire before the end of the current season.
Those hopes were dashed at the start of August, with Lancashire CCC releasing a statement on the club’s website stating that the 32-year-old “will not be returning to competitive cricket for the remainder of the 2010 season.”
At that stage http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lancashire-c806 Cricket Director Mike Watkinson had said Flintoff would “continue his rehabilitation into the winter months and we will constantly monitor and review his progress so that he is better equipped for a return to action."
However, there are now reports that Freddie has been told he will require yet another round of surgery on his right knee if he’s to return to cricket, and after already enduring more than 12-months of rehabilitation it seems Flintoff has elected not to put his body through that process any longer.
Flintoff had retired from Test cricket after last year’s Ashes, but at the time had intended to continue his ODI and Twenty20 career.
