Former England skipper Andrew Flintoff has termed it a “privilege” to have been named the first patron of the Tom Maynard Trust, established after the young cricketer’s death earlier this year in a bid to provide more opportunities for disadvantaged young
cricketers to play the sport.
“I look forward to being able to support Matthew and the trust in many different ways in the future,” said Flintoff, referring to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Matthew-Peter-Maynard-c75259, the deceased cricketer’s father. “It’s a privilege to be involved.”
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 batsman Tom Maynard had been tipped as a bright young talent and a potential star for the England national team in the future, with 48 first-class matches (2384 runs), 63 list A matches (1763 runs), and 50 T20s (1034 runs) to his
credit.
However, the 23-year-old passed away in a tragic accident earlier this year on June 18. The British Transport Police released a statement which confirmed that the right-hander was pulled over by the police at around 4.13am next to the Wimbledon mosque in
Ryford Road for driving erratically.
However, Maynard fled the scene, with police at a loss to discover his whereabouts for a period of up to 45 minutes, after which his dead body was discovered on the train tracks near Wimbledon Park London Underground station at around 5:10am.
The cause of death was later confirmed by the British Transport Police as electrocution - a Home Office pathologist revealed, after a forensic post mortem, that Maynard was electrocuted by the live rail (owing to which he suffered http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Burns-c48842), after which he
was hit by the train, which caused multiple injuries.
The tragic accident sent shock-waves throughout the sporting community and beyond, with thousands turning up at the funeral (at Llandaff Cathedral on July 4) to pay their respects to the deceased cricketer. In early August, Maynard senior (a former England
batsman) announced the decision to set up a trust in the memory of his son, and a sponsored bike ride was arranged between Cardiff and The Oval on August 21 in order to launch the trust.
“The cycle ride was a great example of people coming together to work for a fantastic cause,” Flintoff said.
