Andrew Flintoff set to retire from cricket
England international Andrew Flintoff is set to announce his retirement from all forms of the sport of cricket on Thursday afternoon. This news comes after it was told to him that he may have to undergo
another surgery on his right knee, followed by a period of rehabilitation if he wanted to play cricket again. However, it has been reported by the Telegraph that Flintoff has opted for a career as a cricket presenter instead of going through the entire process
again.
Flintoff has been out of international cricket since the Oval Test match of 2009 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and he missed even the Indian Premier League this year.
Flintoff’s injury issues had come to light during the Ashes and he had even missed one of the Test matches before being called up for the final Test at Oval. After the completion of the series, Flintoff had
to undergo a micro-fracture surgery on his knee, an operation which involves a series of breaks in the bone to promote a resurfacing of the joint.
Flintoff tried for a comeback at the start of this cricket season for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lancashire-c806, but was not able to, and he had to undergo another surgery. He had earlier announced that he will not play in Test matches
and refused an incremental contract that the English cricket board offered him to play only ODIs and T20Is.
Flintoff had won a $1.5m contract to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL for two seasons; 2009 and 2010, but after playing in only four games in the IPL 2009, he had to return back because of his
injury issues.
Flintoff played in 79 Test matches and scored just less than 4000 runs and scalped 226 wickets. His bowling and batting averages were similar – 31.77 and 32.78 respectively – and that put him in the list
of all-time great all-rounders.
However, Flintoff’s best moments came in the Ashes 2005 and Ashes 2009 when he was instrumental in winning his side the urn.
