Andrew Flintoff to soon get professional boxing license – Boxing News
Former English cricketer Andrew Flintoff is on his way to get a 12-month professional boxing license by the British Boxing Board of Control. Flintoff has presented his medical details to the board. Once they are cleared, the 2005 Ashes hero will be licensed
to fight on November 30 in Manchester against an unknown opponent, as of now.
“It is likely to be granted next week,” confirmed Robert Smith, one of the board’s panel members. “The reports from our Area Council representatives indicate that Mr Flintoff is fit, in shape, and has been well-schooled by Barry McGuigan and his son Shane.
But I think it is fair to say we are not expecting Freddie Flintoff to be the next Sugar Ray Leonard.”
Flintoff, 34, has been a legendary cricketer for the English cricket team. However, due to his recurring injuries, he was forced to retire from the sport. In his recent interview, Flintoff expressed excitement over his new role as a boxer, saying it is a
complete lifestyle change for him. However, ‘Freddie’ did admit the fact that he loves cricket more than anything, and that he would choose cricket any day over boxing.
“The licence will be granted pending the medicals being cleared. It has many parts - physical, blood test, scans, eye test, and they all come in from different places, and are all sent in to us independently,” the board further added.
Once Flintoff’s medical documents are cleared, he will be able to get a license for his first boxing match. It should be noted here that a 12-month license is a temporary one for starters, based on their physical fitness and medical reports. Once a professional
boxer, Flintoff will then make his way towards extending his license.
Flintoff has been training for ten weeks now with former world champion Barry McGuigan and his son Shane. The former captain is hoping to make a strong statement in the sport. He is currently working hard, sparring for hours every day to ensure his body
is ready to take the beating. If successful, Flintoff has the frame and size of reaching the elite level in the division.
