Andrew Gemmell earns Men’s 1500m freestyle gold: Day eight – 2012 US Swimming Olympic Trials
Open water world champion, Andrew Gemmell earned gold medal of the Men’s 1500m freestyle on last day of the 2012 US Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha on Monday, July 2.
The 21-year-old Gemmell, who won gold medal of the 5km team event at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, dictated terms to his opponents in the distant freestyle event.
With his persistent efforts, he succeeded in outperforming his strongest challenger over the finishing end for gold medal. He continued his nerve-wrecking pace throughout the event and touched the finishing wall for gold medal with the timing of 14 minutes
and 52.19 seconds.
The gold medallist was trailed by Connor Jaeger, who was 0.32 seconds apart and proved his mettle for second position of the discipline by clocking a time of 14 minutes and 52.51 seconds.
Third spot of the race was secured by Chad La Tourette, who remained 5.02 seconds behind and secured bronze medal of the discipline with the timing of 14 minutes and 57.53 seconds.
Afterwards, the crowd witnessed a sluggish effort of Peter Vanderkaay, who remained nearly six seconds behind and finished fourth in the event by producing a time of 15 minutes and 03.37 seconds.
The fourth position holder was followed by Arthur Frayler, who stayed almost one body length away from overpowering his former finisher and submitted a time of 15 minutes and 04.69 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth position of the 1500m event was obtained by Ryan Feeley, who was almost 10 metres apart and posted an effort of 15 minutes and 10.52 seconds.
Feeley was trailed by Michael McBroom, who stayed considerably slower form his former finisher and ended his swim in seventh place by clocking a time of 15 minutes and 14.85 seconds.
Finally, Sean Ryan gained eighth position of the thirty-lap event as he stayed almost 1.50 seconds apart and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 15 minutes and 16.18 seconds.
In addition, Gemmell and Jaeger will represent USA in the 1500m event at the 2012 London Olympic Games while the swimmers articulated that they would try hard to excel at the mega event.
