Andrew Gillespie wins Men’s 50m back-stroke gold medal: Day one – 2011 Australian University Games
Queensland University of Technology’s Andrew Gillespie earned the gold medal of Men’s 50m back-stroke on the first day of the 2011 Australian University Games. The meet ended on Tuesday, September 27, at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre in Queensland.
The 19-year-old Gillespie conquered the top finishing spot of the event and posted a time of 26.53 seconds for gold medal. His effort was just 0.12 seconds slower than the Games mark of 26.41 seconds, made by Grant Brits of Macquarie University in 2008.
The gold medallist remained 0.93 seconds ahead of his closes competitor, Atte Liimatanien of Macquarie University, who earned silver medal of the discipline by submitting a time of 27.46 seconds. Liimatanien was trailed by University of Melbourne’s Raymond
Mak, who was just 0.14 seconds slower than him and stepped on the podium for bronze medal by reporting in a time of 27.60 seconds.
In the meantime, spectators enjoyed the significant efforts of Thomas Moreton of Monash University, as he was only 0.13 seconds slower than overwhelming the effort of bronze medallist and ended his swim in a time of 27.73 seconds for fourth position. Moreton
was chased by University of NSW’s Matthew Spence, who surfaced as the fifth position holder of the event by clocking a time of 27.92 seconds.
Sixth position of the swim was secured by Spence’s team-member, Andrew Kennedy, who stayed 0.37 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and hit the finishing wall in 28.29 seconds. Kennedy managed a lead of nearly one second over his following competitor, Ernest
Lourens of University of South Australia, who produced a time of 29.16 seconds for seventh position. Samuel Hall of University of Queensland was the eighth finisher of the single-lap Men’s event, as he completed his race in the last spot with an effort of
29.84 seconds.
Gillespie was overjoyed with his comfortable win in the 50m sprint, while the arena appreciated the marvellous efforts of all contestants in the final round. Furthermore, the winners were called upon the victory stand for medals after the session’s conclusion.
