Andrew Harris dumps Wayne Montgomery to claim a third round spot – Australian Open (juniors) 2012
South African youngster, Wayne Montgomery, was ousted in the round two of the Australian Open (juniors) tournament by the upcoming Aussie star, Andrew Harris, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Sixth seed Aussie had an advantage of the
support of local crowd, especially his parents and uncle was present at the arena. Montgomery was just accompanied by his coach.
It was always difficult for the South African contender with all the factors running against him. Both were facing each other for the first time and were extremely young at the professional level. Harris had just played seven professional
matches before this whilst his rival was playing his sixth match on Tuesday.
An impressive start from the visitor gave him a lot of confidence. He broke his opponent’s serve with two delicately placed winners across the court. Moreover, he successfully held his serve in the next game to take 2-0 lead upfront.
Local youngsters continued his hunt for the break as the games passed by and scores kept ticking over. At the scores of 3-4, Harris broke serve to level the scores and diminish the lead of his opponent.
It was a turning point in the set as the South African contestant felt heartbroken at that stage. The Aussie held his serve to mount more pressure on his opponent. Montgomery served to save the set but failed to do so. He fought
hard but could survive just one deuce before his opponent turned the tables on him and broke serve to seal the first set triumph.
The Aussie youngster received massive applause from the crowd on his every successful point. He carried the same momentum into the second set and broke serve in the second game to take the initial lead. First three games were bagged
by the Aussie that thumped his opponent on the back foot.
Harris broke serve in the sixth game to take four games lead as the scores moved to 5-1. The South African broke serve back to decrease the lead but his serve was broken in the next game that confirmed the third round spot for
the Aussie youngster.
