Andrew Higginson upsets John Higgins to win maiden pro title – Player Tour Championship event 5
The 33-year-old from Widnes, Andrew Higginson, who is ranked 23rd in the world, has won the first professional title of his 16-year career after he defeated the reigning world champion, John Higgins, by a frame score of 4-1 in a
best-of-seven frames final match of the Players Tour Championship event five on Sunday, September 25, 2011.
It was an accomplishing performance form Higginson as he held his nerves and shrugged off his heavily favourite opponent with an impressive score-line. He also enjoyed classy breaks of 63 and 78 in the second and third frames respectively.
Higginson, who previously was known for reaching the final of the 2007 Welsh Open, where he lost 9-8 to former world champion Neil Robertson, admitted that winning John Higgins, who is a four-time Crucible winner, has given him great pleasure.
“I'm thrilled to bits,” said Higginson.
The Wizard of Wishaw, John Higgins, is considered by many as one of the best all-round snooker players ever to hold the cue. However, he has not been able to win any title since he clinched the Betfred.com World Champion in May 2011.
Higginson, who won 10,000 pounds along with a trophy, stated he was lucky Higgins was not able to produce his best game but on the same note, the Brit said he was happy about it.
Higginson remarked, “Even though it's not one of the big ranking tournaments, there were 200 players in it including all the big names, so to be the last man standing is a great achievement. Especially to beat John, the World Champion and best all round
player in the game, in the final. He wasn't at his best but I'll still take it.”
“I was practising the day before coming to Sheffield and hitting the ball better than I have done for years. Over the two days here I've made so many good breaks, not centuries but 60s and 70s which are enough to win frames,” he said.
