http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s interim chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch wants left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson to be a part of the Test team against South Africa, despite being out of form in recent times.
The Kangaroos will visit South Africa for a complete series in October. Both teams will play two Twenty20s, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and a couple of Test matches.
Johnson will not be a part of the Twenty20 team, as he was dropped on the basis of poor form. However, the aggressive fast bowler will be with the team in the 50-over format.
The Australian selectors have not yet announced the Test match squad, but Hilditch insisted that Johnson would be a key player for the team in the longest version of the game.
According to the acting chairman of selectors, “Probably the best he’s ever bowled was against South Africa three years ago when we played there and won. I think he’ll be looking forward to the South African conditions and I think he’ll do really well. From
my perspective he's not under any threat at all.”
Hilditch further revealed that the struggling fast bowler was disappointed at not being selected in the Twenty20 squad. He stated, “Mitch is disappointed. Obviously I’ve spoken to him about it. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 was tough for him. The reality is he didn’t do quite
what we wanted in Sri Lanka. They were very difficult conditions for him and the way he bowls.”
Australia have not been able to maintain their dominance in cricket and have struggled to do well in all three formats of the game, especially Twenty20.
The team recently toured Sri Lanka and started off in a dismal way, losing the two-match Twenty20 series by 2-0.
However, things got better for the Kangaroos in the longer versions of the game, as they overcame the opposition in the ODI and Test series.
It will be a bigger challenge for the Aussie team to do well against the Proteas, who have been playing extremely good cricket in the recent past, as they have found a very good combination for each format of the game.
