Andrew Kam wants Lee Chong Wei to win Asian Games just like late Punch Gunalan – Badminton news
Datuk Seri Andrew Kam, who is the owner of Malaysia’s renowned professional club KLRC, expressed his wish and expectations from the top shuttler Lee Chong Wei to win the gold at Asian Games just like the late Punch Gunalan did in 1970.
Since the victory of Punch, all other Malaysian shuttlers have been missing the mark for the last more than four decades.
However, Andrew knows that Chong Wei has the ability to emulate Punch by winning the title in the upcoming edition of Asian Games which will take place in South Korea, in 2014.
Chong Wei, who has been placed at number two in Men’s Singles world rankings, showed a wonderful performance in the recent London Olympics 2012 and won his second consecutive silver medal by narrowly losing the title match to China’s Lin Dan.
However, the next target of Chong Wei is to prove his worth on arena and win the World Championships 2013 and Asian Games 2014.
The 29-year old Chong Wei still did not deny the chances of playing in the 2016 Olympic Games if his physical condition allows him.
Andrew wants Chong Wei to become the first shuttler after Punch to win the title in Asian Games.
He stated, “No Malaysian has won the Asiad gold after Punch and that should be Chong Wei’s target.”
While talking about the achievements of Punch at international stage, Andrew said that he grabbed almost all major titles.
He added, “Punch won almost all the major tournaments in his time. Unfortunately, badminton wasn’t an Olympic sport during his era. He also went full circle as an excellent coach and administrator. His achievements are truly praiseworthy and he will always
be remembered.”
Chong Wei has had a bad period for the last couple of months as he got a severe injury which almost hampered his chances to even step into the arena.
However, the passionate and determined Chong Wei not only recovered from injury but also put up a staggering show at Wembley Arena and reached into the final.
The Malaysian hero not only played tremendous badminton in the final battle again Lin but also reached at the verge of victory but remained unlucky and the gold medal slipped away from his hands.
Nevertheless, Chong Wei eyes on Asian Games and is capable of winning this missing title in his legacy, as he has got what it takes to maintain his top position among the best in the world.
