Andrew Ladd scores game-winner as Winnipeg Jets win wild 9-8 game against Philadelphia Flyers
The scoring just did not stop during the matchup between Winnipeg and Philadelphia, which had the 19,000 plus crowd at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania continuously on their feet Thursday night, October 27, as the Jets earned their third victory of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season by edging out the Flyers, 9-8.
Winnipeg Jets captain, Andrew Ladd, scored his third of the season during the final moments of the game, which not only gave the newly relocated team a much needed win against a big team but also put him in shock over how high the score was.
"I definitely didn't come in here thinking we'd win 9-8", Ladd said after Thursday’s matchup in Philadelphia. "It was kind of like (1990s hockey video game) 'Blades of Steel' out there".
Scott Hartnell potted his third goal of the season 4:10 into the opening period, but in the next 14 minutes, Winnipeg dominated as Randy Jones shot his first midway through, followed by Jim Slater and Kyle Wellwood nearly five minutes apart, giving the away team a more than comfortable lead over their opponent.
Tanner Glass and Nik Antropov scored exactly a minute apart in the second period, which certainly stunned the home crowd after their team fell to, 5-1, in the opening minutes.
Claude Giroux made a comeback for the home team by scoring two minutes later on a power play as Winnipeg gave Philadelphia a 5-on-3 man advantage with Andrew Ladd and Johnny Oduya out with minor penalties.
Evander Kane widened the gap by scoring his second on another added man advantage midway through but the Flyers responded as Danny Briere and Maxime Talbot scored two straight, giving the home crowd some hope of a comeback.
Danny Briere added another 1:09 into the third period followed by Matt Read and James van Riemsdyk, both with their third of the season to surprisingly put Philadelphia ahead by one only three minutes into the final.
Winnipeg did not stay behind for long with Alex Burmistrov’s first of the night and Mark Stuart’s first of the season two minutes later.
James van Riemsdyk levelled the match with less than four minutes remaining to force overtime but Ladd’s game-winner at the 18:54 gave the Jets the boost they needed to takeoff.
