Andrew Luck gives mixed bag of performance as Chicago Bears beat Indianapolis Colts – NFL Recap
Chicago Bears looked phenomenal with reunion of quarterback Jay Cutler and wide receiver Brandon Marshall as they won Week 1 game against Indianapolis Colts 41-21 on Sunday, September 09, 2012.
It was not such a pleasant evening for the first overall pick of this year’s draft Andrew Luck. Luck did not look much league-ready as was previously anticipated, apparently because he lacked support of other players around him.
Although Luck played well for a rookie, he lacked the eye of an eagle on a few occasions as he completed 23 out of 45 passes. He scored one touchdown and covered 309 yards. According to the Associated Press, Luck said:
"There will be a lot of positives, a lot of negatives, we'll try to learn from it. I'm still disappointed fresh off what happened but we'll get over it."
Bears offence showed what they are capable of. Cutler scored two touchdowns and covered 333 yards. In his debut for Bears, Marshall scored a touchdown and caught nine passes for 119 yards. Talking about the game, Cutler said:
"I thought Indy, they weren't really scared of him. They were going to let him make plays if he was capable of making plays. They wanted to stop the run, and they were going to play man against us and try to beat us outside.”
Colts defence looked even worse as they gave away more than 40 points in the game. They were very vulnerable, especially after linebacker Dwight Freeney got an ankle injury and was unable to return.
Colts started the proceedings with fantastic interception of Cutler’s throw by Jerrell Freeman for a touchdown.
Bears running back Michael Bush made the score level with a one-yard run to the end zone, ending the first quarter at 7-7.
Bears made a comeback in the second quarter and scored an early touchdown with Cutler’s three-yard pass to Marshall. After that Robbie Gould posted a 35-yard field goal.
Running back Donald Brown put Colts back into the game with an 18-yard run into the end zone. Bush ended the first half of the game with a one-yard running touchdown to increase Bears lead to 24-14.
Bears remained on top in the third quarter as they scored a touchdown as well as a field goal. Going into the final quarter, the score was 34-14 and Colts were slowly losing their chance to win the game.
Although Colts managed to score a touchdown after Luck gave a four-yard pass to Donnie Avery, it was all over when Alshon Jeffery scored a touchdown as he caught a 42-yard pass by Cutler, making the score 41-21.
