Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning: Indianapolis Colts in a fix – Part 1
The Indianapolis Colts are in a situation they were in exactly 14 years ago. It was to make a decision about their future quarterback (QB), Peyton Manning.
They look back at their choice and feel proud to have made a right decision. Manning had to replace another quarterback who had spent over a decade with the team.
The team is back in their past again, this time their veteran QB is Peyton Manning. The choice in front of them is Andrew Luck.
This is another time that the Colts face an equally difficult task, choosing between Manning and Luck.
It looks even more difficult given the fact that both player are of similar stature and calibre in their respective leagues, making the choice harder for them.
Andrew Luck has finished the American college league season on top, playing as a QB with the Stanford College football team.
His senior counterpart, Peyton Manning, did not play the regular season of the National Football League (NFL).
This does not affect his status as the all-time favourite and one of the best team in the league, with regard to quaterbacks, is finding it difficult to let him go.
The team has cleared the hurdle of eligibility of recruiting Andrew Luck as a top notch draft pick next season.
The month of April marks the beginning of the draft season in the American professional football every year. The induction of drafts is a major way of recruiting new players by the NFL’s 32 franchises.
Andrew has spoken of his professional football career ambitions, stating that he will go professional for sure when the next football season begins, provided he has a potential recruiter.
A matter of choice is not relevant in his case.
He stands eligible to be recruited by the Colts. The rule is that the team, which finishes the regular season at the bottom of the American professional football league, will qualify for the top draft pick.
All ratings have pointed out Andrew Luck as an undisputed top draft prize this season.
With the confirmation that he is going pro and the Colts' eligibility to sign him, the ball is now in the court of the Indianapolis's management.
Irrespective of the clearance from all sides, none of the Colts' officials have spoken of their Luck signing ambitions publically.
It may be due to the fact that their owner, Jim Irsay, has gone to reshuffling the team management straight after the regular. He has fired his veteran vice chairman, Bill Polian and his son, Chris Polian, who was the Colts’ general manager.
Polian, before his departure had been part of the Manning controversy. He was the only official from the side to have spoken about the future of both QBs.
Having remained uncertain about Manning’s recovery from a neck injury and return to his side, Polian told the media of the possibility of keeping both players on the roster at the same time.
His approach was to sign Luck and wait if Manning returns to the team next season. If Peyton Manning is able to recover and returns to the Colts, they can then take a decision on Luck’s future.
First of his given options was to keep both players on their pay roster. It could help the replacement of Manning with Luck in the long run.
Given that Manning is nearing his football career maturity, he is unlikely to continue playing football for more than a couple of years.
