Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III: Indianapolis Colts admit of difficulties in QB’s choice-NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts have admitted facing difficulties in terms of choosing draft quarterback between Andrew Luck and Robert Lee Griffin III before finally settling down with their decision of selecting the former.
2012 National Football League (NFL) draft is just around the corner and Colts have now made their choice as final about picking Stanford College’s QB, Andrew Luck.
Both, Colts’ general manager, Ryan Grigson, and owner, Jim Irsay, have rated both players of a similar calibre and talent, and both of them have good chances of achieving an equal amount of success in the professional league.
However, according to the owner, the decision in favour of Luck to be their future QB was based on the similarities in his qualities and situation to their former star QB, Peyton Manning.
Manning and Luck have many common factors. For example, fathers of the players have played the professional league as QBs, both are coming out of the college league on top and both of them have finished at second, respectively, in the Heisman Trophy.
Even Colts have seen themselves into the same situation as they had been in 1998. Their decision of signing Manning had then come after well and thorough evaluation of the player in front of another player of his stature.
Irsay admitted to have applied the same formula in evaluation of Luck, which his then vice chairman, Bill Polian, had used for assessment of Peyton.
Still, he conceded it was too tough to decide who the best QB is as he had to take note of so many factors involving the game and equally higher number of outside reasons to be believed.
He said:
"You have to go into it with amnesia when you really start getting into it because you want an open mind and not be influenced by outside sources and those sorts of things."
Grigson believes that there is nothing to lose for either of the players as both of them have outstanding set of skills with great potential to perform.
Grigson said:
"Both guys have tremendous intangibles and their skill sets are outstanding. I don't see how either of them are not successful in this league."
With the draft to be held from April 26-28, Colts are now hundred percent to go for signing of Luck after the NFL formally declares him to be the number one prize of this season.
