Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III? Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay open to all options–NFL News
Indianapolis Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay, has denied that the top draft prize, Andrew Luck, was going to be their only and final choice for prospective quarterback recruitment.
Irsay, who has orchestrated Colts’ rebuilding campaign since their poor ending of the last season and completely revamped the team at all fronts, said that Robert Griffin III, the other top draft pick, qualifies as much as Luck does.
The owner’s statement comes after an earlier report that the Indianapolis Colts are hosting Andrew Luck in the city for individual workout in a couple of weeks.
One of the reasons behind the exclusive hosting is that the general manager, Ryan Grigson, was not able to assess the players on their respective pro days due to an illness.
However, it remains uncertain if the team is going to invite Griffin III for such a workout. If they do, it will leave all the scenarios as possibilities.
Irsay’s statement of being in a fix over the choice of draft signing comes well with his earlier stance of looking at both players before reaching out for one of them.
He had referred the situation to the one the team had to face in 1998 when they had to choose Peyton Manning in front of another draft of almost similar calibre.
The owner said that he had made the choice, which proved in next 14 years to be credible one. Peyton Manning played for Colts for consecutive 14 seasons and made and broke many records in the way to take Colts on top of the league.
Now, the owner is keen on making another similar decision, which is going to have a long-term impact on the team.
Irsay has come under fire over the controversial release of Peyton Manning and seems to have too much at stake to prove that he was right in his decision.
The only possible way for him is that the new quarterback performs better than Manning and this is the reason that the owner does not want to rush to a final decision about the draft recruitment.
So, while the team is hosting Andrew Luck to assess his talent and skills, Robert Griffin III also remains on the opportunity for signing with Colts.
A number of officials from the team’s front office were present at the Griffin III pro day, as they were on Luck’s, but according to the owner, they are yet to make a final call.
Jim Irsay said:
"It's up in the air. We have to look at this thing completely open-minded. You have two outstanding athletes, two great pure passers, two guys from families that are incredible."
The draft season is starting from next month, April 2012, and the situation around the prospects is going to be clearer only then.
