Andrew McArthur makes the cut at the European Tour’s Final Qualifying Stage
Scotland’s Andrew McArthur carded a five-under par 65 in the fourth round of the Final Qualifying Stage of the European Tour’s Qualifying School, to take the share of the 39th position.
The tournament is being played at the PGA Catalunya Resort’s spectacular Stadium Course, where a total of 73 players secured their places in the final two rounds of the event.
In the meantime, 19 former European Champions missed out on the chance of making their way into the European Tour’s next season.
McArthur made it into the 2013 European Tour’s Qualifying School after finishing 45th in the European Challenge Tour Rankings.
He now appears to be moving on the right path at the Final Qualifying Stage, in a bid to secure his European Tour card for the upcoming season.
According to the European Tour’s qualifying policy, the top 25 players to finish the tournament this week will earn their way onto the bigger stage.
The Glaswegian got off to a confident start, as he parred each of the first five holes and followed that with a couple of birdies on the sixth and the eighth hole.
He then kept the momentum going into the back nine of the course and drained another four birdie putts against a lone bogey to make a strong charge on the leaderboard.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in making a strong comeback in the tournament, following his faltering performance for an eight-over par 80 in the opening round.
He conceded six bogeys and two double bogeys against just two birdies to mark a disappointing start to his campaign in Spain.
He then made an impressive return by posting rounds of three-under par, one-under par and five-under par in the next three rounds.
“It wasn’t windy so I was just trying to do the simple things,” McArthur reflected. “I played really well the last three rounds. Ever since it got dull I can see the lines of the greens. When the sun is out here at this time of the year I really struggle
to get the lines so the first day I was three-putting for fun, it was horrible”.
