Andrew McCutchen to emulate Roberto Clemente – MLB News
While individuals strive for leaving behind a legacy that benefits the generations to come, there are some deeds that characterize the essence of humanity. The compassion and sacrifice – among others, are central features of it.
That is what the Pittsburgh Pirates centre fielder Andrew McCutchen believes in. He is engaged in charity works these days – idolizing and emulating the great Roberto Clemente, whose legacy continues to inspire millions around the world.
"Look at Roberto Clemente, at what he did: The majority of people that you ask about him, they don't say that he was a great baseball player, they say he was a great guy," McCutchen had said earlier this month. "That's the person that I admire, and that's
how I want to be.”
Indeed, McCutchen has left no stone unturned to follow the example of that great player and philanthropist. Roberto Clemente’s philanthropy was not meant to gain name and fame, he was rather too dedicated to his cause to be affected by such worldly considerations.
In effect, McCutchen wants to be on the same path. While epitomising greatness himself, as he continues to be a regular fixture of the Pirates’ offence, McCutchen wants to do something beyond the baseball field.
Serving the humanity through philanthropy is what he aspires to do. Clemente whose work is written in cornerstone of schools, other public buildings, and continues to be part of collectibles, book covers, and all, was as great a philanthropist as a prominent
player of the game.
McCutchen has his view on the subject.
"My biggest thing is, I don't want people to know me because I played baseball. I want people to know me for other things I did outside a baseball field. Yeah, Clemente was a great baseball player, but the things he did off the field said more about him."
McCutchen is already on that path. He has recently got affiliated with Habitat for Humanity. Affiliation with an organization which is established and organized, respected widely is a message of intent in itself.
Add to it the fact that he has become the Habitat for Humanity’s spokesman for the greater Pittsburgh area. That is how he can benefit the community in more powerful. That is how McCutchen believes he can be able to assist in improving the quality of life
for those who do not have the means.
In essence, McCutchen knows exactly what he needs to do beyond baseball.
