Andrew Murray challenges his son to beat his score
Virtually, it seems as if Andrew Murray is participating in the European Seniors Tour’s Fubon Senior Open this week. However, the reality is somewhat different.
Along with his campaign at the Miramar Golf and Country Club, he is consistently motivating his son Tom, who is fighting his way into the European Tour through the Qualifying School Second Stage.
Murray fired a flawless five-under par 67 in the opening round of the Fubon Senior Open, to take the third position on the leaderboard, on Friday, November 9, 2012.
After completing his round, he challenged his son through a text message to beat his score at the qualifying school to remain in contention for the European Tour card.
Murray’s son started off his campaign with a decent 68 in the first round. However, he failed to keep the momentum going into the second round and recorded a disappointed 74.
Murray now wants his son to beat the 67 mark in the third round to make a comeback in the tournament that is being held at the Lumine Golf & Beach Club.
“I have been texting Tom over there at Q-School and when I finished my round in Taiwan I told, you’d better go and beat my score now son!” he said.
“He started really well this week with a 68 but unfortunately he went backwards a bit on the second day with a 74 but here’s hoping he can finish the job on the final two days”.
He added, “Of course, Tom is delighted I am doing well over here but it is his turn now and hopefully he can do the job over there and make it into Final Stage. He has been working hard”.
Murray is now just one-stroke behind the co-leaders, Tim Thelen and Peter Dahlberg. The Englishman started off his round in style by recording birdies on four of the first seven holes that he played.
He then added another shot to his scorecard by birdying the par-five 12th hole and finished the day without conceding a single bogey.
The 56-year-old now plans to keep the momentum going into the remaining two rounds, in a bid to record the first ever Seniors Tour victory of his career.
