Andrew Oldcorn eyes a comeback at US Senior PGA Championship after Cataract surgery on right eye
The rampaging Andrew Oldcorn on the European Senior Tour is now eyeing a comeback after recovering from the cataract in his right eye and is hoping to stage a blistering performance in the upcoming US Senior PGA Championship.
Oldcorn started his bid last year with a stunning victory at The De Vere Club PGA Seniors Championship which was also his first victory on the Senior Tour.
Hoping to continue his trailblazing golf amid the grizzled field of the Senior Tour at the Senior Open Championship next month, Oldcorn slipped out of contention after acquiring a terrible Cataract in his right eye.
The 51-year-old had already undergone a successful operation for the Cataract in the left eye in 2008 and the recurrence of the same problem in the right eye pulled him out of the mainstream golf for the remaining season in 2011.
He went through another successful surgery for his right eye and has been going through an extended rehab for several months now.
He returned to course in winters and has been practicing to make another thrilling comeback on the Senior Tour this year.
A rejuvenated Oldcorn said, “I’m chomping at the bit to get going again. I probably came back too early in Mauritius, but I was keen to safeguard my place in the top four on the Order of Merit which gets me into the US Senior Open. I encountered a problem
over there when I got an infection, but the eye seems fine now. I’ve had to make some adjustments to the lie of my clubs as I’ve now had two eyes operated on and it alters how I see the ground and the ball”.
Old corn missed the chance to surge to the top of the Order of Merit on the Senior Tour and had to suffer a setback due to his burgeoning injury.
The weathered Oldcorn said that he is used to of setbacks in his professional career and knows well how to coup with the disastrous form vows.
After his surgery last year, Oldcorn did make a comeback with the MCB Tour Championship, one of the last events on the Senior Tour in Mauritius and finished for a strong joint ninth.
He closed the year ranked third on the Order of Merit behind the raging Australian Peter Fowler and Englishman Barry Lane.
After turning professional in the year 1982, Oldcorn joined the European Tour in the year 1983, through the qualifying rounds.
He has won three European Tour titles in his decade’s long career and has six professional wins in all.
The 51-year-old Bolton native is considered as one of the less successful players on the tour despite of his strong short game.
The zenith of his career came in the year 2001 when he lifted the Volvo PGA Championship as the oldest player to win the title. His record was later overtaken by Miguel Angel Jimenez.
