Andrew Schnell sails past Thomas Brinkman in quarterfinal – Saskatoon Boast Open 2011
Fourth seeded Canadian Andrew Schnell flogged his lower ranked compatriot Thomas Brinkman in the quarterfinal of the Saskatoon Boast Open 2011.
It took the fourth seeded Canadian only 42 minutes to get rid of the lower ranked Canadian by whipping him with a score of 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, and 11-7 in the quarterfinal of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event which is
in its tenth year at the YMCA in Saskatoon, Canada.
The 20 year-old fourth seed commenced the first round of the match and he got off to a great start as he was able to hold his service for the first few rallies. It was a while before the fellow countryman made a return and finally
started hitting some ball. Nonetheless, the world number 117 (Schnell) hit much more advanced shots than his opponent and he easily bagged the opening round.
In a twist of fate, the fourth seeded player plummeted in his service game and he hit a few shots out on the outside line and eventually faltered. Though the players had matched an eye for an eye, Brinkman had just outplayed his
opponent and with a stunning forehand clogged the second set with eleven points and restricted his opponent to only nine.
During the third set, Schnell again picked up and gradually took over his opponent’s lead. He then smashed a few rail shots by hitting the ball tight and close to the sidewall. In doing so; he forced his opponent to scrape his
shot off the wall. Therefore by restricting her opponent to a weak defensive lob towards the back corner, Schnell bagged the third set.
Amidst the fourth and the final set, both the players were locked into an intense rally and neither player wanted to slump. As the two matched an eye for an eye, the score progressed on even terms till the first five points. In
the following two points Brinkman again picked up and for a very brief moment took the lead but once again was outwitted by his adversary. Ultimately the fourth seeded Canadian sealed his victory of the set and the match.
Next up for the fourth seeded Canadian in the semi final is the top seeded Australian Zac Alexander.
