Andrew Sheridan to stay with Sale Sharks
Andrew Sheridan the crutch of the English side ended the ongoing gossip about his future by committing to the Sale Sharks. Andrew joined Sale in 2003 from Bristol. Now he has extended his contract and is planning to remain at the Edgeley Park.
There were rumours all over about him being in contact with the French where he was being offered with a huge amount, while the trend was already set by his fellow English men Jonny Wilkinson, Tom Palmer and James Haskell.
All the gossip went cold by the return of the former coach Steve Diamond as the executive sport director. It was announced that Steve got the contract signed by Andrew turning every other news false.
It’s a wise move on Andrews’s end, as his new deal shelters his International future until next summer and a move towards France would have been a violation of RFU’s decision regarding the selection of players working trade after the World Cup in New Zealand.
Andrew started playing rugby since the age of 9; he then progressed to the U16 and U18 group in the school teams at the Dulwich College. He joined Richmond in 1998 and made his way to the U21 squad. He made his appearance at the 1999 Sanzar tournament in
Argentina. Andrew also played in the 2005 and 2009 tours and he was a part of the English team in 2007 World Cup.
With Bristol, Andrew gave around 80 appearances. His physique was a major problem for him. His short height, extra weight and lack of mobility made it difficult to fit him in a position suitable for him. The solution was finally sorted out by Peter Thorburn
by placing him at loosehead prop where he showed his skill and ability.
The relegation of Bristol brought Andrew to the sale sharks in 2002. In his first season with Sale, he played in the final of 2004 Powergen Cup. After that, his 2nd appearance was in the 2005-06 season, where he contributed a lot to the teams’ victory but
later sustained an injury which took him out of the final game where his team defeated the Leicester Tigers and became Premiership champions; it was for the first time that the Sale Sharks achieved the top rank.
Diamond said: “I am very pleased Andrew has re-signed for the club.”
Sale chief executive Mick Hogan said: “I remember watching him develop as a player and knew he was going to be one of the best as his career progressed. I have followed his progress with interest, and I am looking to build a team around 'Sherri' and Mark
Cueto, who has also been a loyal servant to the club down the years.”
