Andrew Sheridan’s Rugby World Cup campaign over after single match - Rugby Update
Andrew Sheridan will be leaving for home in the next couple of days after he was dropped from England’s Rugby World Cup squad due to a devastating injury to his shoulder. The 31-year-old prop has been ruled out from the remaining matches of RWC after sustaining
a dream-shattering hit during the first match of the ongoing tournament against Argentina on September 10. The manager of the England team, Martin Johnson, confirmed on September 13 that Sheridan is ruled out from RWC after physical tests were conducted.
Sheridan was suffering from the same injury before the start of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and has undergone surgery a couple of times. However, he was included in the final squad of England after proving his fitness to the selectors. The same injury occurred
in the very first match of the global event against Pumas in Dunedin.
Giving the details of Andrew Sheridan’s injury, Martin Johnson told journalists that it is sad news for the player to be ruled out from the global event. Johnson added that, “It's really sad for Sheri. He has been unlucky with injuries and we wish him all
the best for his recovery. We brought five props so we have options there and we can bring another player out but we will decide what to do about that in due course.”
While talking about a replacement, Johnson said that his team has come out with five props for the event and has got the options available. England has got Paul Doran-Jones and Tim Payne who can play at the props’ position. The English side is also expecting
their skipper, Lewis Moody, to participate in their upcoming match against Georgia. Johnson hoped that Moody will be available for England in the next encounter.
He stated that, “We are hopeful he is going to be good to go. We talked last week that he wasn't far off being fit. Another week is always better when you've been injured for a long time but, at some point, you've got to go and we are hopeful.”
England will take on Georgia on September 18 in Dunedin in its second match of Rugby World Cup 2011.
