Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Stuard Broad: England announce three different captains for Test, ODI and T20
England will be having three different captains in the three formats of the game after Andrew Strauss retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket to prolong his career in Test cricket. Alastair Cook is expected to take over from Strauss for ODI captaincy
while Stuart Broad will be captaining the Twenty20 (T20) side in place of Paul Collingwood. Strauss remains the captain of the Test side.
This is the first time in the history of English cricket that the side will have three skippers at the same time.
It is believed that the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wanted Strauss to continue as the captain of the national team however, the left-handed opening batsman requested some time to evaluate his options.
Meanwhile, after due course of time, Strauss finally decided not to extend his ODI career. After this, the head coach Andy Flower chose not to push Strauss to reconsider his decision as the coach deemed it appropriate that there was no point in putting any
sort of pressure on the skipper to carry on, when clearly he did not want to go on with the job.
Flower has expressed full support in the abilities of Cook to carry the ODI team, which is a big boost for the batsman before officially being announced as the new captain.
On the other hand, England have taken a great step by appointing the youngster Stuart Broad, as the skipper of the shortest version of the game. ECB believes that the young pacer has the talent and ability to lead his side in the T20 games and will be more
productive once he takes the lead role in the national team.
The 34-year old Collingwood will most likely be dropped by the ECB as the board believe there is no point in picking him for any format of the game since the chances of him hanging around until the next ICC World Cup 2015, are low.
Team coach, Andy Flower wants the selection process to be based on keeping in view the 2015 World Cup and select those players who could help in formulating the final team for the mega event.
According to Flower, this is the right time to make preparations for the next World Cup and the younger players should be selected now to groom them by 2015.
On the other hand, national selector Geoff Miller, on previous occasions has expressed concern regarding dealing with more than one captain. Well now he has to deal with three skippers and it will be interesting to see how the selection committee nurtures
their relationship with the three different leaders.
