Middlesex won’t be expecting to gain much service from Andrew Strauss in the near future, but are still pleased to sign the England skipper for another two years.
The contract extension will extend Strauss’ involvement with Middlesex to 16 years, with the opening batsman first signing on at the county club back in 1997.
“We expect Andrew’s involvement with Middlesex over the next couple of years to be minimal – he has bigger fish to fry with England - but when he is available to play for us he is a great person to have around,” managing director of cricket at Middlesex, Andrew Fraser, said in a statement on the club’s website.
“We are delighted that Andrew has chosen to remain at Middlesex. The role of a county changes once a player becomes established with England. On the way through the system counties develop and guide players but once they are with England it becomes more of a supportive role and occasionally counties have to help and rehabilitate players who fall from the England set-up, providing them with a soft landing and the wherewithal to get back to the top. I would like to think we possess those qualities at Middlesex and they have been recognised by Andrew,” Fraser said.
While Strauss has secured his county future, the 33-year-old will be firmly focused on his Ashes duties as he flies to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 with his England teammates today as they attempt to maintain their grip on the coveted urn and in doing so become the first England team to win an Ashes series in Australia since 1986/87.
If Strauss can lead his team to victory down under he will join former Middlesex players Mike Gatting and Mike Brearley in captaining England to Ashes victory in Australia.
