Andrew Waters’ Jurakan wins 2011 Peg Legs Round Tortola Race, dedicates victory to late Dave West
Sailing team on Melges32, Jurakan, skippered by Andrew Waters, had a tremendous event at the 2011 Peg Legs Round Tortola Race, as the team made their way to the top of Racing Class standings. They sailed throughout the event in a fitting tribute to Dave
West, who was a previous member of the crew and had passed away two weeks ago.
The Jurakan team dedicated this year's race to West in recognition of his immense contribution to sailing in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Racing commenced for three classes, the Racing Class, Multihull Class and Cruising Class, where Waters’ Jurakan grabbed Racing Class victory in a corrected time of 4 hours, 39 minutes and 58 seconds. The monohull record, which was 4 hours, 15 minutes and
5 seconds, set by Dave West sailing on Jurakan in 2009, was unbeaten.
Second place in Racing Class was captured by Pipe Dream, skippered by Peter Haycraft, with just a 5 second difference from Jurakan as the team posted a time of 4 hours, 39 minutes and 63 seconds. Kevin Rowlette's Rushin' Rowlette was able to hit the third
spot in the class standings.
In the Multihull Class, Triple Jack, skippered by Richard Wooldridge, who is the winner in previous two years and holds Round Tortola Race record, clinched top position followed by Wildfire led by John Heyes.
As far as the Cruising Class is concerned, Bill Bailey’s Second Nature stole the show with impressive sailing under unfavourable conditions. They were closely followed by Jack Dusty III, led by Bill Hirst for a second podium finish.
Weather conditions in the event were not ideal but there was enough wind to complete the races. For 16 yacht entries, the winds were comparatively lower, about 14 knots over the racing area, which was a bit tricky to sail on full scale during the event.
