Andrew Wilson of Datchet Water Sailing Club put up a wonderful show at the Rutland Sailing Club to clinch the title in style at the 2011 RS Vareo Inland Championships. The winners secured five points in six races, including a discard.
The second spot on the podium in the respective meet was occupied by Netley Sailing Club’s Mike Rhodes with a seven-point difference, as he managed to score 12 points. Simon Collinson of Llandegfedd Sailing Club ended third after displaying a spirited effort.
Current National Champion, Andrew Wilson, had a clear edge on boat-speed to dominate racing on both days. He grabbed five straight first podium places along with a third in the sixth race to add another championship title to his career record this year.
Four different sailors were getting close behind Wilson during the race to clinch a second place in the six-race series. However, after some consistent sailing and avoiding any collisions with other boats, Mike Rhodes was able to secure the second podium
overall with 12 points. Simon Collinson, who displayed good speed in the respective meet, hit third spot with 13 points.
The overall positions at the conclusion of the event are given below:
1. 583 Andrew WILSON, Datchet Water Sailing Club 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, (3) = 5 points
2. 305 Mike RHODES, Netley Sailing Club 3, (6), 3, 2, 2, 2 = 12 points

RS Vareo fleet shared a start and outer-loop course with the RS100s and also the large RS800 fleet that seemed to head their way during the windward-leeward race course. The Vareo fleet was greeted by ideal weather conditions on both racing days with a wind
building up from force three to four knots under the shiny sun, which was perfect for a superb sail.
