Andrey Kumantsov crushes Matteo Marrai to reach round two – Siberia Cup 2012 CH
Local challenger, Andrey Kumantsov, slaughtered the Italian contender, Matteo Marrai, with double breadsticks at the Siberia Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He jolted down a 6-1, 6-1 victory against the world number 496 to power into the second round at this ATP
(Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Tyumen, Russia.
With support from his home crowd, Kumantsov unleashed his true potential and eventually carved out the victory in straight sets. After bagging the match in 42 minutes, the Russian comfortably cruised into the round of 16.
The 26-year-old Russian thundered into this indoor hard court event. He showed flawless tennis and wiped out the opening five games before his rival could come on the score sheet. Kumantsov then slid his serve once again and clicked the opener with a breadstick.
He brushed off the lone breakpoint he came across and converted two out of three break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 301st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Kumantsov maintained his intensity in the proceeding set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. After Marrai held his serve in the third game,
the Russian went berserk again and stroke out the last four games consecutively. He was never challenged with any trouble and capitalised on three out of four break chances to register a spectacular 6-1 score line.
The local rising star fired 13 aces and finished the deal with 59 points. He spilled more double faults and produced a lower first serve share of 56 per cent as compared to his rival’s 79 per cent. However, Kumantsov brilliantly marked 21 out of 23 points
on it.
Next challenge for Kumantsov is the eighth seed, Evgeny Korolev from Kazakhstan. The seeded Kazakh battled past the Latvian contestant, Andis Juska, in a three-set thriller to set up this meeting.
The Ukrainian challenger, Denys Molchanov, also earned the fame later that day. He trashed Belarus’ Dzmitry Zhyrmont, with a breadstick to advance. Molchanov dusted away all three breakpoints he faced and availed five out of six break chances to manipulate
a 6-1, 6-2 success.
