Andromeda galaxy?

I heard that andromeda galaxy is going to collide with the Miky Way. When will this happens?

Yes It will collide about 4-5 billion years from now.. but the stars from each galaxy will not collide into each others.. These two galaxies will merge into one..Some of the stars will get ejected out and some of them will get sucked into a newly formed supermassive blackhole..

At least four billion years - when it happens the 2 galaxies will merge and eventually form a new  single galaxy after a few hundred million more years.

i think its 2 million light years away, but pretty close to the milky way ,so. . . im guessing in a pretty long time. were probably all going

Your are correct!

In about 5 billion years the Milky Way Galaxy will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy. This, coincidentally is around the time our sun will become a Red Giant, engulf Mercury and Venus, and incinerate the surface of the Earth. Eat your heart out 2012 lol.

I guess cataclysms happen in twos.

Technically since the Andromeda Galaxy is more massive than the Milky Way the post collision galaxy will be called Andromeda, not that it will matter. Chances are mankind will be long gone before this happens. Shame, it would be pretty darn cool to see =)

It should be noted that this is not 100% known. The Andromeda Galaxy IS getting closer, but it may miss. It is estimated that it will at least get close enough that both galasies Dark Matter Halos will collide. The ESA is going to launch Gaia in 2009 which will give us a better estimate.
