Andrzej Fonfara nails Glen Johnson via unanimous decision in a 10-round non-title bout – Boxing News
Andrzej Fonfara, the United States Boxing Organisation light heavyweight champion, outfoxed veteran American pugilist Glen Johnson, the former International Boxing Association light heavyweight champion, to collect an impressive unanimous decision in a 10-round
not-title bout held on July 13, 2012.
The duo put forth an exciting showdown and despite the fact that Glen was old, the veteran mesmerised his fans by his fighting skills. The pay-per-view was jointly organised and promoted by Dominic Pesoli of 8 Count Productions and Leon Margules of Warriors
Boxing.
In addition, the showdown also witnessed Jose Luis Castillo take on Ivan Popoca, co-headlining the fight card. The event was televised live from UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
From the very first round, Fonfara was the one who used his agility and speed, connecting well targeted jabs and punches. Glen tried his level best but was unable to inflict maximum damage.
Johnson’s pace was visibly sluggish most probably due to the aging factor as a result the Polish Fonfara kept on pummelling Glen every now and then with powerful jabs. At the end of the 10-round battle, Fonfara rose at the occasion by collecting scores of
99-91, 97-93, and 97-93 on all three cards.
After the win, in a recent detailed interview, Fonfara shared his thoughts about the bout. Andrzej praised Glen for being a talented pugilist, adding that he still has enough power in his arms and body to nail the best names in the division.
Fonfara stated, “Glen is still a very good, tough fighter, who can take a hard punch and give a hard punch back. I was confident when the fight started, my jab was working, but then for a round or two, Glen surprised me couple of times, dictating the fight.
I have to admit that I’ve got hit pretty good, but looks like my chin improved a lot since my – for me forgotten – loss to Findley.”
It must be noted, that Glen was in his career’s 70th bout and after the third consecutive loss the ‘Road Warrior’ has already announced his retirement. With this win, Fonfara has grabbed his 22nd career victory out of a total 25 bouts.
Furthermore, the win has enabled him to secure eighth rank in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings.
