Andujar/Mayer crush Erlich/Ram for a final showdown – Winston-Salem Open 2012
Spanish-Argentinean duo, Pablo Andujar and Leonardo Mayer, stunned the defending champions, Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, with a breadstick at the Winston-Salem Open 2012 on Friday. They penned down a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the Israelis to cruise into the final round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
The first time paired up, Andujar and Mayer, displayed superb co-ordination to trash the Israeli wild card entrants in straight sets. After earning the success in 55 minutes, the Spanish-Argentinean pair reached the final round at this outdoor hard court event taking place from 19th to 25th August.
Andujar and Mayer made a powerful entry at the Wake Forest University. They drew the first blood in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. After Erlich and Ram held their serve in the fifth game, the winning duo maintained their intensity and stroke out the last three games. They blocked the lone breakpoint they came across to keep their entire serves and capitalised on two out of three break chances to bag the opener with a 6-2 win.
The Spanish-Argentinean collaboration kept their rhythm in the following set. After the Israelis held their serve in the opening game, Andujar and Mayer unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off the last six games consecutively. They amazingly brushed off all five breakpoints they faced and cashed in three out of five break chances to carve out the set with a breadstick.
On the whole, Andujar and Mayer fully capitalised on several double faults the Israelis committed. They clobbered a lower first serve share of 60 per cent as opposed to their rivals’ 69 per cent but impressively marked 18 out of 24 points on it.
Up next for the Spanish-Argentinean junction is the Mexican-American tandem, Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky. They crushed the Spanish-Brazilian pair, David Marrero and Andre Sa, with a breadstick to set up this epic battle. Gonzalez and Lipsky were never threatened with any breakpoint and capitalised on three out of five break chances to clobber a 6-4, 6-1 score line.
