Andujar/Mayer upset Bopanna/Fyrstenberg in quarters – Winston-Salem Open 2012
Spanish-Argentinean duo, Pablo Andujar and Leonardo Mayer, stunned the top seeds, India’s Rohan Bopanna and Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg, in a three-set nail-biter at the Winston-Salem Open 2012 on Thursday. They nudged up a 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 10-4 victory
over the highest ranked team to power into the semi-finals at this outdoor hard court event held in Winston Salem, United States.
The unseeded junction of Andujar and Mayer showed brilliant co-ordination to outclass the Indo-Polish pair in their first encounter. After carving out the victory in one hour and 47 minutes, the Spanish-Argentinean collaboration assertively advanced into
the final four at the Wake Forest University.
The high flying Bopanna and Fyrstenberg enthusiastically entered this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event. They amazingly warded off all three breakpoints they came across to keep their entire serves. However, the Indo-Pole
junction failed to seek any break opportunity and took the set to a tie-breaker. They edged past their opponents in it and clinched the opener with a 7-6(6) score line.
Andujar and Mayer rebounded in the follow-up set. They blocked the lone breakpoint they came across to keep their entire serves. However, the Spanish-Argentinean junction squandered both break chances and took the set to tie-breaker. After the points were
levelled at 4-4 in it, they got the breakthrough and bagged the equaliser with a 7-6(4) win.
The underdogs kept momentum rolling in the final set or the super tie-breaker. They cruised to a 6-0 lead in it before closing out the decider with a 10-4 success.
The first-time paired up, Andujar and Mayer, withstood 11 aces struck by the top seeds. They also clobbered an equal first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to their rival’s 49 per cent and amazingly availed 41 out of 52 points on it. The Spanish-Argentinean
pair took full advantage of eight double faults Bopanna and Fyrstenberg spilled and finished the match with 88 points.
Next in queue for the winning team are the Israeli wild card entrants, Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram. The defending champions dumped the Colombian collaboration of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Alejandro Falla in straight sets to set up this meeting.
