Australian national selector, Andy Bichel has backed country legend Ricky Ponting to get back to his best in the upcoming series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750.
While opinions are widely divided among former Aussie players over the longevity of the most capped Kangaroo player, Bichel however, is convinced that Punter will soon regain his form and must not think about getting axed.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ricardo-Gouveia-c84824 has got a couple of 60s in recent times, under pressure as well, and he needs to keep on performing,"
stated Bichel.
In his illustrious career, the 37-year-old has played in 158 Test matches, scoring a mammoth 12656 runs at an impeccable average of 52.29. He remains the second best all time run getter behind http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556 and despite such stats, his position remains
highly vulnerable.
It has been associated with a dismal display with the bat over the past 12 months or so, where Punter has failed to reach a single three figure score and has average a meagre 26.64. It includes some high profile losses against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 while inconsistencies
have led the team to some embarrassing defeats against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 (beaten on their home turf after 26 years).
Despite all, a good upcoming series against the Men In Blue could change all and Ponting will hoping to start fresh and get among regular run scorers. He will acknowledge the words mooted by his ex-teammate Bichel, who is now also on the selection panel.
The former fast bowler simply hopes to create an environment where players are geared up to perform for the national team rather than having to prove their mettle every time they wear the baggy green cap.
"I'd hate to think anyone who is playing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 is completely under pressure," Bichel said. "Every game is important, but I dont want Ricky or anyone looking over their shoulder because (the axe) is around the corner," Bichel was quoted in the Daily
Telegraph.
