Andy Buckworth out of action due to a ruptured spleen
The Australian BMX young gun, Andy Buckworth, ended up with a ruptured spleen after attempting a technical move during a session in Greenville, North Carolina, on Wednesday, June 8th.
As per his Facebook status, the 21-year-old crashed after attempting a decade air, a trick that is considered to be one of the toughest in the sport. While executing the trick, he lost control on the bike and as a result, it slipped out of his hands, sending
him crashing down.
The crash resulted in his spleen getting ruptured, making him require immediate medical attention. Fortunately for him, his friends were with him when the incident happened and immediately took him to the hospital for further examination and treatment.
Buckworth is a patient of asthma, so the doctors are hoping to avoid performing a surgery in order to prevent the blood from seeping into the abdominal cavity.
It was Buckworth himself who broke the news of his misfortune at 8:30 pm on Wednesday night by updating his Facebook status, which read, “Laying in a Greenville hospital with a ruptured spleen. Thank god for good friends.”
He gave a shout out to his friends, thanking them for paying him a visit in the hospital. These friends included X Games 16 BMX Park Gold Medallist Daniel Dhers and the owner of Bare Essentials Sports Medicine Co, Trish Bare Grounds. Ryan Guettler, Kyle
Baldock and Sandi were also present in the list of friends whom Buckworth thanked via his account on the social networking site.
His friends, on the other hand, were also keeping everyone updated on the condition of the BMX up-and-coming star through Facebook throughout the night. One such update by Grounds read, “Andy Buckworth has ruptured his spleen but not having surgery at the
moment -- out of commission for at least 12 weeks. He is doing well as we get him checked into the hospital for the week.”
Though his injury is severe and he is in a lot of pain at the moment, it is still too early to say with certainty that he will be out of action for majority of the summer season, though it is very likely that he actually will miss out some big competition,
including X Games 17 that start off next month in Los Angeles.
Hopefully, the up-and-coming BMX star will be back on his bike in time for X Games 17 as well as many other competitions scheduled to take place in the upcoming months.
