Andy Dalton leads Cincinnati Bengals to competitive victory over Washington Redskins – NFL Recap
Quarterback Andy Dalton threw touchdown passes and gained a total of 328 yards while completing 19 of his 27 passes to lead Cincinnati Bengals to their second straight win (38-31), defeating Washington Redskins, who were playing their first home game of the season on Sunday, September 23, at FedEx Field.
Dalton also sent an interception, but his performance, especially in the final quarter, stole the show.
Entering the final quarter both teams were tied 24-24. Dalton produced two touchdown passes, finding Jermaine Gresham on the first attempt and Andrew Hawkins on the second, to gain a handsome advantage that the Redskins could not take away.
He said after the game:
“The creativity that we've got here, talent that we have at wide (receiver), the running backs, the different things that we're doing, it's big. You try to find a way to get an advantage in the game, and we found a couple today."
The game was pretty competitive as Redskins, despite going behind the visitors, managed to rally hard to tie the score and set stage for a thrilling final quarter.
Bengals got their first touchdown in the first minute of the game, but the lead was soon neutralised when the hosts got a touchdown through an interception return. Bengals did not take much time to score another touchdown, and once again grabbed the lead.
They dominated most part of the second quarter as they scored a field goal and a touchdown to further increase their lead.
Redskins managed a field goal in the same quarter to reduce some deficit and they were brilliant in the third quarter in which they rallied to score two touchdowns and tie the game without allowing Bengals to get any scoring move.
Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3), who was playing his first game in front of the home crowd, completed 21 passes of 34 attempts for 221 yards and got one touchdown.
Redskins have lost two straight games after a promising start to the season. They are 1-2 and placed at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) East.
Their defence has not been able to complement the offence and this could hurt their prospects in the season.
Even in their victory in the season-opener against New Orleans Saints, Redskins’ defence gave away 32 points. In Week 2 game, Redskins surrendered 31 points to St. Louis Rams and in their recent loss they conceded 38 points. If the trend continues, the efforts from the offence, especially RG3, will all go in vain.
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said of the defence:
“It’s something we’re going to keep on working on. We have to get better at that area. Obviously, we gave up some big plays. It’s an area that we need to work on and we will.”
Redskins are now going to face Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4 game, while Bengals, who are 2-1, will take on Jacksonville Jaguars.
