Andy Flower asks Andrew Strauss to not make a hasty decision
The England coach, Andy Flower, has advised skipper Andrew Strauss to take his time in deciding about his One-Day captaincy.
After England’s exit from the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2011 at the hands of Sri Lanka in the quarter-final, rumours spread that Strauss would step down from the captaincy of one-day cricket.
The English coach revealed that Strauss has not come up with a final decision and he stressed that the skipper take his time in making a final verdict. “Straussy and I talked about this briefly when a story broke speculating about his one-day future," Flower
said.
Flower said he and Strauss will spend a few weeks with their families and then will be discussing the matter. While talking about Strauss, the coach said that the skipper can still play a significant role for the future of England’s cricket. "I know he would
have liked to have finished stronger with the bat personally, having had such a great start to the tournament, but he's been as strong as ever," Flower told media.
Strauss has been giving a remarkable consistent batting performance for the past 12 months, as he brilliantly led his side to 2010 Ashes victory over Australia at their homeland after a long period of 24 years. In addition, under his captaincy, England won
all the One-Day series in year 2010. The player has also given an outstanding performance in the ongoing tournament scoring 334 runs at an average of 47.71 including a big 158 runs in a group match against India which is his highest World Cup and ODI score.
The ICC World Cup 2011 is the second mega event of Strauss’ career. Earlier he was part of the 2007 edition where he scored 83 runs in four innings.
Flower also added that England Cricket Board (ECB) will take the decision after an assessment of the past six month’s performance of the skipper, with the focus on wins in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 and
said, “We were very tentative and we obviously had a very poor start."
England showed an inconsistent performance in the ongoing tournament especially in their group match with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, where they were given a big target of 339 runs which was apparently impossible to achieve but they managed to level the score and end the match
in a draw. On the other hand, they faced humiliating defeats in the group matches from the minnows http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
England have never been to the semi-finals of the World Cup since a 1992 defeat from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in the final. In the ongoing tournament, the England team has been suffering an array of injury blows as they had to lose their important batsman Kevin Pietersen,
who was replaced by Eoin Morgin. In the same way, fast bowler, Stuart Broad was also ruled out due to side strain and all-rounder Michael Yardy left for his home just before quarter-final due to depression.
