Andy Key believes he can still unlock Leeds’ clinical side
Andy Key believes that he is facing the most challenging time of career as the Leeds Carnegies were beaten by Wasps 8-17 on Sunday, 31 October.
Leeds have failed to win a game in the Aviva Premier League and there have been calls for the director of rugby to resign.
Key said to the BBC: "This would be a test for any management team. A lot of our defeats have been our own doing. Somewhere our ingredients are not creating the right cake for us.”
The director of rugby feels that his side must be ruthless and clinical if they are to survive in the league.
“Our work-rate and effort of the players is still great but is not getting us either the points on the board during the matches or results in the table. That is hugely frustrating," added Key.
Leeds are currently bottom of the Aviva Premiership and have only managed to pick up two bonus points in their seven matches so far this season.
However, the director of rugby insisted that the players and management had to work together to get themselves out of the situation.
“There is always a danger when you are in the position we are, that everyone is maybe turning to someone else for the answer rather than saying it's a collective thing. We are in this together and no one man makes the team and we have to dig ourselves out
of this whole collectively rather than individually”, said Key.
Leeds will face promoted Exeter in their next premiership game in what will be a crucial match. They will then also visit Harlequins and if Key can’t manage to produce a win in the two fixtures, his tenure as director of rugby may come to an end.
Key believes that his team can climb the table and stated that, “The spirit is right and the direction [the team is going in] is right.”
