Andy Murray acknowledges he has to play perfectly to topple Roger Federer – Tennis News
World number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, has admitted that he can only beat Federer if he plays flawless game in their Wimbledon final on Sunday.
The Brit said, while giving an interview on Saturday, “I just need to try and make sure I play a perfect match on Sunday. It obviously would be very nice [to beat Federer], but I can’t allow myself to think that far ahead. I’ll
just focus on getting the tactics right. There’s obviously going to be nerves and pressure, but I need to try and stay focused.”
Murray became the first player from his country to reach the final at All England Club in the last 74 years. He is now aiming to write his name in the history books once more by becoming Britain’s first player to win a Grand Slam
in the last 76 years.
Fred Perry had won his last Wimbledon title in 1936 and Bunny Austin reached the final here in 1938. No player from the country which invented tennis and hosts the biggest tournament of the sport has reached even the second Sunday
here since then.
Murray has all respect for his opponent in the Sunday’s Wimbledon final. Federer is a six-time former champion and has reached his record equalling eighth final here. The Swiss Maestro won titles here in 2003-07 and 09. The 16-time
Grand Slam champion was dethroned by Rafael Nadal in five sets in the 2008 final. He faced two more five set defeats at the hands of Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2010 and 11 respectively.
Praising Federer, Murray said, “He’s one of the greatest ever players. He’s been doing it consistently over a number of years. The matches he has lost the last couple of years were five sets against Tsonga, five sets against Berdych,
five sets against Rafa. He’s very, very tough to beat here.”
Murray will be hoping that luck favours him this time, as he had faced heartbreaking semi-final losses in the last three years. However, he last two years’ conqueror, Rafael Nadal, embraced an upset loss at the hands of the 100th
ranked, Lukas Rosol, in the second round this time.
