Andy Murray battles past Viktor Troicki into next round as play resumes on Day 10 – French Open 2011
Fourth seeded Brit, Andy Murray battled past Serbian number two Viktor Troicki as play resumed on Day 10 (May 31st) at the 2011 Roland Garros to move into the quarterfinal round.
Surviving an early scare, Murray bounced back in the third set to secure a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 victory over the Serb, taking nearly four hours.
Starting off slow, Murray got broken in his very first service game to trail the game score 0-5. Although he fought back to reel off four straight games, the Serb served out the set at 5-4 with back-to-back backhands down the line.
Capitalising on the Brit’s fourteen unforced errors, Troicki registered a 61% win on his first serve including thirteen winners, going one up in the set score in almost forty minutes.
Turning the tables on the Serb in the second set, Murray raced to a 4-2 lead in the second set. However, a resilient Serb bounced back to reel off four straight games to clinch another set 6-4. Leading the set score 2-0, the Serb
looked all set to secure a straight sets win here.
However, still in the fight, Murray fought back hard in the third set to secure a 6-3 win for himself and reduce the deficit in the set score. The Brit continued to humiliate his opponent, as he clinched the fourth set 6-2.
Hitting an amazing 91% win on his first serve including seventeen winners and three aces, Murray was able to level the set score and keep the chances of a possible title win here, alive.
The chair umpire called off play for the day due to bad light while the two players were tied at 2-2 in the decider. Resuming play on Day 10, a refreshed Serb got off to a strong start as he broke his opponent twice to lead the
score 5-2. Just when it looked like it was all over for the Brit, Murray saved one match point to bounce back and succeed in levelling the score at 5-5. Continuing with his superb form, Murray reeled off two more games to secure a 7-5 win and a spot in the
quarterfinals.
Murray moves on to play Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in the quarterfinal round. The Argentine moved ahead after doing away with qualifier Alejandro Falla in five sets.
