Andy Murray beats Roger Federer to win Shanghai Masters
Andy Murray conquered Roger Federer in the final of the Shanghai Masters 6-3, 6-2 to win his second Masters title this year.
The British No.1 was yet to drop a set in the tournament heading into the final, and the same applied to his Swiss counterpart. However, Federer struggled to read the Murray serve. Murray left the event with his record still intact, breaking Federer’s serve twice in each set and winning in an hour and 25 minutes of play.
“I served great especially when I was behind in games, and hit the ball well from the back of the court,” said Murray, who won 70% of points on his serve, compared to Federer’s 52%.
“Obviously sometimes with Roger he will dictate the points and you just have to hang in and obviously I'm very pleased. You can't let Roger get out in front, you have to go after him early and I returned his serve well tonight and got a lot of free points on my first serve.
“My second serve has improved so much since the start of the year and he wasn't able to take his chances on my second serve. I've been moving well all week - I still want to get some endurance back, that's something I've lost a little bit - but the speed was very good tonight.
“You need to come up with great shots against Roger to beat him so that was pleasing,” Murray added.
Murray now has an 8-5 winning career record over Federer. Despite the loss, Federer will now overtake Novak Djokovic in the world rankings and move up to second spot.
