Andy Murray becomes a laughing stock after losing the first round at Queen’s – Tennis News
Great Britain’s top player faced further embarrassment, as he lost in the first round of the AEGON Championships in London. Murray was the defending champion at the grass courts of Queen’s Club but he was sent packing by world
number 65, Nicolas Mahut of France, after the opening round.
The Brit was looking to make good preparations for the Wimbledon Championships by playing at this ATP World Tour 250 event but his journey ended in a poor fashion.
During the post match press conference, when a journalist asked Murray if this loss will put a dent to his preparations for the Wimbledon Championships, the Brit replied sarcastically, "It's panic stations now. I've just got no
chance to be ready for Wimbledon. It's going to be impossible, I think. This kind of thing happens often. Novak Djokovic isn't playing the next two weeks so there is no need for me to panic. I lost the match 7-6 in the third in my first game of the tournament
and it takes a bit of time to adjust to the grass courts."
He added, "It was a very close match... losing serve at the beginning of the third set after breaking him was probably not great. Got him back into the match. He's a very good grass court player.”
The three-time Grand Slam finalist also stated that he was not miss-hitting during his first round loss and he just needs to spend more time on the grass courts before the start of the third Grand Slam of the season.
Murray’s ability of winning this year’s title at the All England Club and becoming the first British player to win a Grand Slam in almost 80 years was already being questioned and this loss has given critics further strength to
bash the Brit.
The 25-year-old did not have a good clay court season either, as he failed to even reach the title match of any of the four tournaments he participated in. He was beaten by Spain’s David Ferrer, ranked sixth in the world, at the
French Open last week but it was hoped that the former will still make a good start at his favourite surface, the grass courts.
Just yesterday, former world number two, Tommy Haas of Germany, severely criticized Murray that the latter has a habit of faking injuries. The German added that almost all the players on the ATP World Tour know this.
