Andy Murray believes he can put up a good show at the French Open – Tennis News
Great Britain’s top player, Andy Murray, thinks that he can do well at the French Open. The Brit has started to believe that he can even go on to claim the title at the red clay of Roland Garros.
Murray’s coach, Ivan Lendl, says that the London, England resident has a complete game and there is no reason why he cannot win the French Open. Lendl has filled Murray with confidence and given him the hope that he can overcome
his closest rivals on the clay courts.
Murray has captured 22 titles during his career so far but not a single one of them is at a clay court tournament. The Brit has won most of the crowns at the hard surface.
However, the 24-year-old did well at the slowest surface in the last season compared to the previous years. Murray reached the last four at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, only losing to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
The Brit was just two points away from becoming the first player to beat Novak Djokovic in 2011 but in the end lost a thriller 1-6, 6-3, 6-7(2) at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia semi-final.
Murray then headed to the French Open, where he reached the semi-finals for the first time in his career, losing once again to the eventual champion, Nadal.
The Brit said, during a recent interview, "I have to believe that I can win the French Open. I was going to say that I have to agree with [everything Lendl says] but I don't. Last year gave me a lot of confidence and I still feel
like I could have played better. The French Open was really important for me last year. I've said it many times, not because I got to the semis there for the first time but because of how the tournament went.”
He added, "I wouldn't say I'm the favourite going in; Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have got much better results than me on clay but I think I can win against them."
Murray is in a good touch, making an impressive start to this season. The right-hander has already grabbed a title at the Brisbane International. He inflicted first defeat on Djokovic, by beating the Serbian in straight sets at
the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The Brit will start his clay court season at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters next week.
